The global pandemic has completely altered the way we do business as most organizations have adopted a remote working model, placing the health, safety and well-being of their employees at the forefront of their activities. Working from home has become the new normal. This trend like likely to become the future of work as companies move to a hybrid working model, even after they decide to return to the office. While this may enhance overall productivity, it definitely poses a few challenges for the leadership, especially the first line managers who are directly responsible for the day to day activities and performance of the staff. Handling teams in a remote working environment has therefore become a critical skill for team leaders across the globe. Here are 5 essential tips for effectively managing virtual teams:

  1. Boosting Communication
    It is easy for employees to feel disengaged when they all work from different locations. More and more companies are investing in different modes of communication to ensure that their people feel connected at all times. Line managers should encourage and model the use of diverse communication channels, including video chats and texting groups.
  2. Clarifying Expectations
    Building on effective communication, it is essential for supervisors to let their team members know what exactly they are expected to deliver, timelines, processes and available resources. Once people are clear on what they need to do they are less likely to waste time on re-work and can focus on more productive matters or even self-development.
  3. Equipping People with the Right Systems
    Virtual workers often need the latest technology and equipment to ensure that they perform their tasks to the best of their ability and without any interruptions. Line managers should not only ensure that everyone has access to the required software but should also identify if anyone needs the organization to provide them with better equipment including laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.
  4. Ensuring Face Time
    While most teams tend to connect online when required, it is the line manager’s responsibility to ensure that they meet informally too, at least once a while. In addition to skip sessions, career discussions and weekly huddles, managers can set up online potlucks, game night, team awards celebrations or a virtual water cooler, just to encourage that social interaction and build trust among team members.

    Even in the virtual working environment, team leaders are often regarded as the main source of guidance and support, which requires them to be there for their team members whenever required. Sharing of personal numbers so that people can get in touch with their supervisors in case of an emergency is highly recommended.

One of the biggest challenges of working from home is blurring of lines between personal and professional lives. It is therefore absolutely essential for line managers to be conscious of personal boundaries and respect them at all times.
